This Sunday, the PS general secretary said there was a need to “respect the work of the judiciary” and said he had a “great responsibility” to ensure the independence of the judiciary and the presumption of innocence.
Speaking to journalists upon his arrival at the Lisbon International Fair (FIL), where the last day of the 24th PS National Congress ends this Sunday, Pedro Nuno Santos was asked how he responds to criticism that he does not defend some socialists in court cases .
In his response, Pedro Nuno Santos said that as secretary general of the PS, he has “a great responsibility to ensure the two fundamental principles of the rule of law: the independence of the judiciary and the presumption of innocence” and said that he must be “disciplined in this.”
“It is very important to separate politics from justice. Politicians make politics, justice does its work and we must respect the work of the judiciary,” he said.
The PS general secretary said that “justice is of course beyond any test” but stressed that Operation Influential Man “received widespread media coverage” and “caused the fall of the government.”
“For a good atmosphere and a good analysis of the justice situation itself, it is not good to make any comments,” he said.
Asked whether court cases had an impact on this congress, given the absence, for example, of former minister João Galamba, Pedro Nuno Santos replied: “There are many people who do not participate in the congress and are ministers and former ministers.” .
