Pedro Nuno Santos is set to pay tribute to Marcelo next week.

The Secretary General of the PS said this Sunday that he intends to congratulate the President of the Republic next week and believes that the socialists’ criticism of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is part of the party’s freedom of opinion.

Pedro Nuno Santos spoke to journalists at the entrance to the last day of the 24th National Congress of the PS, which takes place at the Lisbon International Fair (FIL), noting that, for his part, he intends to have good relations with the head of state.

If the President of the Republic’s schedule allows, Pedro Nuno Santos said he intends to pay his respects to the head of state next week at the Belém Palace.

When asked about the criticism expressed throughout the congress by socialist leaders regarding the decision of the President of the Republic to dissolve parliament and call early legislative elections for March 10, he stated: “The PS is a party of free men and women, they say what they want ” think, and we must respect that.”

“For my part, I want to have good relations with the president of the republic. It has always been this way, and this is very important for the country,” he emphasized.

Before approaching the statue of Mário Soares, designed by Leonel Moura, which is installed at the entrance to the pavilion where the congress is taking place – and in the company of the daughter of the former President of the Republic, Isabel Soares – the new leader of the Socialists also spoke about the presence of António Costa this Sunday at the final meeting.

“We really appreciate and recognize António Costa. If he were not present, it would be a huge failure,” he said, before being asked whether the prime minister could still take on the role of president of the European Council.

“Your future is open. You can be whatever you want, thanks to everything you have given to Portugal and Europe,” he replied.

In front of reporters, the PS Secretary General confirmed his disagreement with the government’s agreement with the PSD, saying that “it would be extremely negative for democracy.”
