Dozens of police continue to protest in front of parliament, demanding better pay and conditions

Dozens of members of the Public Security Police (PSP) remain in front of the Assembly of the Republic on Tuesday to protest against the asymmetry in the distribution of risk allowances compared to the judicial police.

Armando Ferreira, president of the National Police Union, is at the scene and fulfilling the demands of the protesters. “Wage supplements in 2024 will be the same as in 2009,” he emphasized. Armando Ferreira also demands improvements to the PSP fleet.

On Monday afternoon, patrol cars were declared inoperative in a show of solidarity in Greater Lisbon, Setubal, Porto and Santarem. Several pickets are planned for this Tuesday to raise wages and working conditions.

The president of the Professional Police Union Association, Paulo Santos, told Lusa that at 2 a.m. on Tuesday, several dozen elements were still concentrated in the city of Porto, in front of the city hall, where more than 300 people were present.

The official recalled that “the protest is spontaneous” and was not organized by any trade union, and said that dozens of riot police were mobilized for this protest, which also led to the stop of dozens of vehicles in various units.

“In total, we reached several thousand people. There were more than 1,000 people in Porto and Lisbon alone,” said Paulo Santos.
