The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, received Pedro Nuno Santos this Wednesday after the 24th National Congress of the PS, which ended on Sunday. The new Secretary General of the PS began by saying that he did not want to “disclose the contents”, but noted that it was “a good meeting with the President of the Republic.”
Pedro Nuno Santos said that the party is focused on the PS victory scenario.
“The TGV project was created when I was still in government, and now the conditions are in place to launch the competition,” he told reporters. “The railway issue was a taboo issue and it was under me as minister that this national railway project was revived. And now there are conditions to start the competition and submit a candidacy within the established time frame,” added Pedro Nuno Santos.
Regarding the progress of the process after leaving government, he stressed that “processes take time” and disputed the idea that “all problems should have been solved” during the eight years of PS rule: “That doesn’t happen in political life.” , problems are solved, new problems arise.”
“Throughout the whole weekend I tried to maintain the relations of the PS and my personal relationship with the president of the republic,” says the secretary general of the PS.
“We understand that good relations between the leadership of the largest Portuguese party and the President of the Republic are essential for the proper functioning of democracy. And this is a very important moment for us,” said Pedro Nuno Santos.
Regarding the problems that the country faces today, namely the demonstrations of the security forces, Pedro Nuno Santos says that “the current government has committed to increasing salaries by an average of 20%, we want all security forces to feel motivated because we know that it will be much better this way.”
As for the employees of the Global Media Group, the new Secretary General of the PS expressed the hope that “the situation will be resolved as quickly as possible.”
“We are focused on March 10 and the work we have to do in front of the Portuguese,” he concludes.
