The Captaincy of the Port of Funchal this Monday issued warnings of bad weather and high seas for the coast of the Madeira archipelago, which are valid until Tuesday morning.
The warnings are based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) and are related to the general weather situation (wind and sea).
One warning of forecast winds of 51 to 62 kilometers per hour in any direction is in effect until 4:55 a.m.
The regional maritime authority advises shipowners and shipowners to “take appropriate precautions to ensure their safety.”
Regarding the rough sea warning, which will last until 06:00, it highlights that winds will increase and be “very fresh to strong from the end of the day.”
Visibility will be “good to moderate, at times weak later in the day” and waves will be around three meters on the north and south coasts.
Due to this meteorological situation, the captain indicates that it is necessary to strengthen mooring and surveillance of moored and anchored vessels.
He also does not recommend walking on the sea or in places exposed to rough seas, such as port piers, cliffs or beaches, to avoid being hit by waves.
Citizens should not engage in recreational fishing, “especially near rocks and rocky areas frequently exposed to breaking waves, always remembering that in these conditions the sea can easily reach areas of apparent safety.”
