There is a warning that 24,000 Azores are left without a family doctor.

Chega/Asores this Monday considered the existence of 24,170 people without a family doctor in the archipelago “alarming”, citing data released by the regional government, and said the health of the Azoreans should be a priority.

“In the Azores, 24,170 users are registered with the health posts of the island, who still do not have a family doctor. A more disturbing reality, depending on the size of the islands,” the press release reads.

Referring to information provided by the regional government at the request sent by Chega, who has a deputy in the regional assembly, the party warns that it is in San Miguel that the largest number of users without a family doctor (9,521) lives, followed by Terceira (7,596). Faial (2928), Graciosa (1520), Santa Maria (1249), Flores (752), San Jorge (340), Pico (254) and Corvo (10).

Chega is one of the parties supporting the government of the Azores (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) in the regional legislative assembly.

In 2022, the Azores government hired 18 general and family medicine doctors (12 for Sao Miguel and six for Terceira), Chega said, with tenders for 11 specialist doctors still open.

“Health is an area that has always been of concern to MP José Pacheco, who argues that Azorean health is a priority that should be even more on the political agenda,” recalls the party.

In the note, Chega warns that only with the help of general and family medicine, “which accompanies the user from birth,” it will be possible to alleviate hospital emergencies.

“This is the only way to act for the purpose of prevention and prevent emergencies from being clogged by those who need to solve a health problem, and that they cannot do this in health centers because they do not have a family doctor,” the party emphasizes.

On October 14, 2022, Regional Health Secretary Clelio Meneses stated that the executive branch intends to improve access to health care in the Azores so that by the end of this legislature, 90% of the population will have a family doctor.

The current government of the Azores, representing the PSD/CDS-PP/PPM coalition and supported in the Azores Parliament by the executive parties, IL, Chega and an independent MP, took office in November 2020.
