The Azores government stressed on Tuesday that final grade 9 scores in Portuguese and mathematics in the region have increased compared to 2023, with the average score in Portuguese “higher than the national average.”
According to a statement from the regional government (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM), the average ranking of Azorean students who sat the 9th year final exams in the second phase “was better than those obtained in 2023”.
“This year, in Portuguese, the 114 Azorean students who took the test scored an average of 44.8%, while in 2023 they reached 33.9%,” the Regional Secretariat for Education, Culture and Sport said in a statement.
According to the regional secretariat, the average score in mathematics recorded this year by the 110 students in the archipelago who took the test was 22.1%, compared to 18% last year.
“Compared to the national average for Portugal, the average was higher than the national average (44%), while in mathematics the Azores lagged behind the country by about three percentage points (25%),” the report said.
The Azores Regional Secretary of Education, Culture and Sports, Sofia Ribeiro, quoted in the statement, said that the results obtained by Azorean students, “although they continue to be negative, show an increase compared to the previous school year, which should be welcomed.”
“It should be remembered that the regional education system was characterized by greater stability than the domestic education system, which was strongly influenced by numerous strikes and a massive shortage of teaching staff,” the government official emphasized.
On Monday, the results of 6,230 ninth-grade final exams held in 1,219 schools were published.
At the same time, according to data from the National Examination Jury (JNE), published by the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation, the 2nd stage was intended for students who had managed to complete the 3rd cycle, “naturally, students who had demonstrated great difficulties during the academic year.”
As for the 1st stage, the average scores were lower: 44 points on a scale from 0 to 100 in Portuguese and 25 points in mathematics.
