Unions report unpaid wages to ACT Global Media

Unions for Journalists (SJ) and Manufacturing, Energy and Environment Workers of the North (SITE-Norte) have lodged a complaint with the ACT over unpaid wages at Global Media Group (GMG).

In a statement released this Wednesday, the union structures said that a complaint had been filed with the Labor Conditions Authority (ACT) “about the non-payment of December salaries to the workers of Global Notícias,” a company owned by the GMG group.

According to the statement, “employee representatives fear that the situation will continue over time and are demanding an urgent review of GMG’s accounts.”

In the complaint, SITE-Norte recalled that “it has already reported the non-payment of the Christmas subsidy and is now working on an addition to this complaint.” In turn, SJ “in the submitted complaint demanded an urgent investigation into the accounts of Global Media Group as newspapers continue to sell themselves and commercials continue to make money from advertising.”

According to the structure, “money comes, but does not reach the workers” or “in this case, it does not reach everyone.”

In a statement, the unions recalled that “only the employees of Rádio Notícias, the owner of TSF, the employees of Açor Media, the owner of Rádio Comercial Açores and Açoriano Oriental, Naveprinter and Notícias Direct, who still lack salaries in the Global company, were paid for the December salary.” Notícias, which owns the Jornal de Notícias, Diário de Notícias, the sports program O Jogo, several magazines and related services, from secretarial to commercial, with a staff of more than 350 people.”

However, “the Christmas bonus is still missing and has not been paid to any of the approximately 530 employees of GMG.”

SJ, “fearing that the situation will continue and worsen, and taking into account the messages from the President of the Executive Committee, José Paulo Fafe, to some workers on Tuesday, saying that he expects a transfer to pay salaries, but that it is a “wish” that he , without any guarantees, is understood to have “demanded” “the most urgent intervention from ACT.”

The unions also recalled that “dozens of green slips and group service providers have also not received funds due for November, after struggling with payments for October 2023 until the end of the first week of January 2024”, stressing that “importance is missing from -as usual practice since the 10th, with unacceptable pressure continuing on people in very fragile situations who also deserve support and attention.”
