ReTro is the first rhesus monkey to be cloned, and what is new is the strategy used in cloning (with the addition of placental progenitor cells) to improve its efficiency, assures the team of scientists responsible for the process. Rhesus is a human-like species widely used in science. “ReTro is getting stronger every day,” Qiang Sun, a researcher at the Center of Excellence in Brain Science and Smart Technology in Shanghai, China, told El País. His team had already cloned two crab monkeys in 2018, creating 109 embryos and transferring 79 into 21 females, resulting in six pregnancies and two births. Currently, 113 embryos have been created, 11 of which have been transplanted into 7 females, resulting in two pregnancies: one Retro calf was born. Researchers say the use of monkeys is “essential” for biomedical and cognitive research. Qiang Sun argues that cloning a single Rh factor could be very useful for studying diseases with a genetic basis, such as cancer and brain diseases. For now, ReTro’s success opens the door to more successful cloning of this species. Regarding human cloning, Qiang Sun is adamant: “This is completely unacceptable, we don’t even want to think about it.”
