Most of the nurses at the Penafiel and Amarante hospitals asked to be relieved of responsibility because, as they explained, they could not take responsibility for the safety of the care they provided, it became known on Tuesday.
“The situation is chaotic and the nurses are exhausted. We have reached this extreme situation,” said Miguel Vasconcelos, president of the Northern Board of Directors of the Order of Nurses.
In a conversation with Lusa, he emphasized that in recent months the situation in these hospitals has worsened due to the peak of the flu and the lack of conditions, especially in the emergency department of the Padre America Hospital in Penafiel, pointing out that 78 out of 83 nurses admit that “they are not in able to ensure the life and safety of people, the quality of nursing care.” The position of the specialists is reflected in the document sent to the administration and the Health Department.
About 50 patients were admitted on stretchers in the corridors of Penafiel Hospital’s emergency department on Tuesday, but at other times there were 90. “It’s humanly impossible,” Miguel Vasconcelos said.
