Seven people were rescued by the navy after two fishing vessels collided, one of which sank, west of the Penedo da Saudade lighthouse, in the municipality of Marinha Grande, the National Maritime Administration (AMN) said.
The accident occurred at 5:55 a.m. and involved the fishing vessels “Falcão Peregrino” and “Divino Espírito Santo”, which, according to the AMN statement, collided four nautical miles, equivalent to about seven kilometers west of the Penedo da Saudade lighthouse. , in the municipality of Marinha Grande, Leiria district.
Following an alert received at the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisboa), a vessel from the Nazaré rescue station was brought to the scene and the seven crew members on board were rescued.
The collision between two fishing vessels “resulted in significant water ingress into one of the vessels with a risk of sinking, necessitating the passage of that vessel’s crew,” the AMN statement said.
The rescued crew members were “physically healthy and did not require medical attention” and were taken to the port of Nazaré.
All debris that posed a hazard to navigation was collected at the scene, and the damaged fishing vessel sank, the report said.
