The PS/Madeira Party has decided this Thursday to submit a vote of no confidence in the regional government of Madeira (PSD/CDS), led by Miguel Albuquerque, in the Legislative Assembly of this autonomous region, announced the President of the Madeira Socialists.
“The Socialist Party of Madeira will join tomorrow [sexta-feira] in the Regional Legislative Assembly a vote of no confidence in the Government, [Regional]”, PS/Madeira leader Paulo Cafofo told Lusa.
The leader of the Madeiran Socialists, who have the largest opposition party in the Madeiran parliament (holding 11 of the 47 seats in the hemisphere), noted that this decision was made after the head of the Madeiran executive (PSD/CDU), Miguel Albuquerque, was made a defendant and suspected in corruption.
Paulo Cafofo stressed that “these facts are indisputable”, but the island’s leader “has the courage not to resign”, given that “his blindness to power exceeds any value of democratic decency.”
According to the PS/Madeira President, the current CEO “does not have any political conditions to continue to govern the autonomous region.”
Paulo Cafofo recalled that “one of the parties supporting the current coalition governing Madeira (PAN) has deprived Miguel Albuquerque of political confidence.”
“We want to make it clear that we will not accept any candidacy from the PSD/Madeira to form a new regional government within the current parliamentary framework,” he stressed.
Cafofo notes that “the loss of confidence among the people of Madeira and Porto Santos is irreversible” and that Miguel Albuquerque is no longer able to direct the destinies of Madeira.
“The situation is too serious,” he emphasizes, noting that this investigative process has already led to the arrest of the mayor of Funchal, which was “the culmination of a series of situations that the PS/Madeira has been warning about for many years.”
Paulo Cafofo notes that in Madeira there is “a government that daily violates the principles of democracy” and for about 50 years “it has been stifling Madeiran society, depriving it of its critical potential, threatening and frightening it.”
The priority of the current Madeira government is “to use Madeira to satisfy the interests of a small group of people who have long turned their backs on the people of Madeira and Porto Santenses,” Cafofo said, stressing that the regional government “has lost the ability to govern.”
Paulo Cafofo stressed that PS/Madeira is “ready to lead a new cycle of governance in the region.”
On Wednesday, the president of the regional government of Madeira was named as a defendant in a trial that led to the arrest of the mayor of Funchal and two leaders of the AFA construction group.
That day, judicial police carried out some 130 searches in Madeira and various locations on the continent as part of an investigation into alleged crimes related to active and passive corruption, economic involvement in business, malfeasance, receiving or offering an undue advantage, abuse of power and influence peddling.
This Thursday, Belgium/Madeira also asked the PS and JPP to pass a vote of no confidence in the regional government.
Chega has already decided to put forward a vote of no confidence. The party president and Madeira leader met on Thursday evening to discuss the decision, which is expected to be announced next week.
For her part, the PAN/Madeira MP Monica Freitas, with whom the PSD/Madeira signed an agreement on parliamentary protection to ensure an absolute majority in Parliament, said this Thursday that Miguel Albuquerque cannot remain in office and indicated that he can continue to make the parliamentary influence agreement viable, but only if a new leader is appointed.
