A carbon monoxide leak in a building in Buarcos, Figueira da Foz, led to the evacuation of several apartments and the displacement of eight adults and six children, the source of the fire told Lusa this Saturday.
“We received an alert about a possible poisoning situation and, upon arriving at the scene, we discovered that there was a high concentration of carbon monoxide in the apartment on the eighth floor,” said second commander Figueira da Foz Sapadores. Fire Department.
Joao Matias told the Lusa agency that the alert was issued on Friday at 23:41 “by a resident of the same apartment because, upon returning home, he found two birds that were in his kitchen dead and found it very strange.”
“We decided to check all the apartments of faction “D” on the lower floors and did not record any values, only from the sixth floor we found values, so we decided to evacuate from the sixth to the eighth floor,” he said.
In this sense, “eight adults and six children were forced to leave their home, with the majority moving into family homes, with the exception of a couple with three children who needed to be accommodated by the municipal civil defense” in Figueira da Foz.
Joao Matias said that the situation was brought to the attention of the company managing the condominium, which contacted the owners of the apartments and therefore the technicians, especially the gas workers, to carry out an assessment and identify the source of the carbon monoxide leak.
“Right now, [18h00] “Technicians are still working on the ground, the gas has even been turned off, and we have advised all residents that no one should return home without us measuring the level,” he said.
As a precaution, the second commander continued, “people should stay in their family homes, especially because they are also out of gas,” while firefighters wait to contact technicians to return to the scene and measure levels.
There were 11 operatives on the scene, supported by four vehicles from the Sapadores firefighters and Figueira da Foz volunteer firefighters, as well as the Public Security Police (PSP).
