The executive director of the World Food Program (WFP) highlighted on Tuesday the “fruitful collaboration” with Mozambique over the past four decades, pledging to continue supporting the country in the face of difficult cycles caused by natural disasters.
“We are celebrating 44 years of cooperation with the Republic of Mozambique and are proud of the support we provide to the country. Not only in terms of humanitarian assistance, but also in building community resilience,” said Cindy McCain.
The official spoke to the media in Rome moments after meeting Mozambican head of state Filipe Nyusi, who arrived to attend the Italy-Africa summit.
Cindy McCain expressed her intention to continue to support the country, which suffers from cycles of natural disasters due to its geographical location, is prone to storms and at the same time lies downstream of most river basins in southern Africa.
In the current rainy season, which began in October, Mozambique’s meteorological services have already warned that the country needs to prepare for drought in the central and southern regions, as well as above-normal rainfall in the north with the formation of the natural El Niño phenomenon.
“We are working intensively, especially on forecasting, to know where this phenomenon is [El Niño] This will have a greater impact on ensuring the availability of all resources to the population. The Mozambican government has been cooperative in this aspect,” added Cindy McCain.
Mozambique is considered one of the countries worst hit by climate change in the world, experiencing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from October to April.
The 2018/2019 rainy season was one of the harshest in Mozambique’s history, with 714 people killed, including 648 victims of Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, two of the largest to ever hit the country.
