The 291 polling stations for regional legislative elections in the Azores opened this Sunday at 8 am and will close at 7 pm local time (one hour later in Lisbon).
“Based on the information we have, there were no incidents related to the opening of polling stations. So the elections are going well,” Fernando Anastasio, spokesman for the National Electoral Commission, told Luse (CNE).
A total of 229,830 voters are registered to elect 57 deputies to the regional Legislative Assembly, which is 828 more than in 2020.
Eleven political forces, eight parties and three coalitions are competing in the elections: PSD/CDS-PP/PPM, CDU (PCP/PEV), Alternative 21 (MPT/Aliança), PS, Chega, BE, PAN, Livre, ADN, Liberal Initiative and Together for the people.
Based on the results of regional legislative assemblies, the representative of the republic then appoints the chairman of the regional government, who in turn proposes members of the executive branch.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) forecast cloudy but open weather for this Sunday in the archipelago, with a chance of light rain and temperatures of 18 to 19 degrees.
“Open weather conditions are expected to be cloudy. However, we will see a cold frontal surface approaching with waves that will begin to condition the weather on the Western Group islands. [Flores e Corvo] towards the end of the day and in the central group [Pico, Faial, Graciosa, São Jorge e Terceira] It will start at night and will bring rain, but overall it will be light,” IPMA meteorologist Elsa Vieira told Lusa.
