North American rapper Killer Mike was arrested this Sunday by police on suspicion of disrespect that occurred in the pavilion where the 66th Grammy Gala took place.
Michael Render, 48, is known in creative circles as Killer Mike, a name given to him by a childhood friend because of the harshness of his words into a microphone. In addition to being a rapper and songwriter and one half of the hip-hop duo Run the Jewels, Killer Mike is also an actor, activist and founder of the publishing house Grind Time Official.
Killer Mike made his debut in 2000 with a guest appearance on the song “Snappin and Trappin” from Outkast’s fourth album.Stankonia.”
In 2003, he presented his debut solo album “Monster”. That same year, he won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for his appearance on Outkast’s “The Whole World.”
So far, he has released six albums, four more nominations for major music awards and three more Grammy Awards won in this year’s controversial edition that ended with his arrest: Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song for ” Scientists and engineers.” and Best Rap Album with “Michael”, released in 2023.
Social inequality, police violence and racism are the main topics that he touches on in his songs, and it is on these topics that the rapper gives lectures, including at universities.
The rapper’s life spawned the documentary series Killer Mike: The Truth That May Hurt, released in 2019. Described as “fun and provocative”, it highlights the ideas that a musician has to contribute to society.
