The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) warned this Monday about the change in weather on the continent from Thursday, placing 13 areas under a yellow warning level due to rain, wind and rough seas.
Areas under a yellow warning, the least severe on the IPMA scale, begin Thursday morning in the north, with coastal areas receiving three warnings for rain, wind and rough seas. Warnings will be issued throughout the central and southern regions throughout the day.
All warnings are valid until 18:00 Thursday. On the map of the continent, only the areas of Beja, Évora, Faro, Portalegre and Santarem will be marked in green.
In a statement, IPMA explains that weather warnings will be issued over the next few days and asks people to stay tuned for updates to warnings and forecasts, “which, taking into account the timing and associated uncertainty, may undergo some adjustments.” The next update to the statement issued today will be made on Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
For now, based on available data, IPMA explains that after the impact of an anticyclone that brought stable weather and above average temperatures to the continent (with a heat wave in the northern and central regions), rain will return because this anticyclone should have weakened, allowing rain to approach (Atlantic trenches and associated frontal surfaces).
And if the changes are already noticeable on Tuesday and Wednesday, with light rain in the north and center, then it is on Thursday that periods of rain, sometimes heavy, are expected, first in Minho and Douro Litoral, and then everywhere.
Wind intensity will also increase: gusts could reach 90 kilometers per hour on the northern and central coasts and up to 110 kilometers in the highlands. And it reduces the temperature to values close to normal.
The rough seas have been increasing since Thursday, with waves reaching four to five meters. On Friday the situation is identical; there may also be thunderstorms and snowfall in Serra da Estrela.
