On Tuesday, the BE co-ordinator felt the government should have already responded to the demands of PSP and GNR members, warning there would be no peaceful country “without respect for those who work”.
“It seems obvious to me that this problem must be solved now. This is a problem that has existed for too long,” warned Mariana Mortagua.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to the Association for the Protection of Diabetes of Portugal (APDP) in Lisbon, the bloc leader noted that the socialist executive is in “rather haphazard management.”
“The same government in office that manages to solve some problems and launches some projects in health and agriculture, then says that it is unable to solve such a pressing problem. It is very important that there is [por parte] commitments and responses from the government,” he emphasized.
According to Mariana Mortagua, the security forces are “right” when they demand higher salaries.
“[Os elementos da PSP e da GNR] they live too long with an unchanged salary, they have professional difficulties (…), like many other specialists who work for the state and guarantee social services. And they face this inequality in relation to the risk subsidy provided to the judicial police. [PJ]. The police are absolutely right and have the right to protest and be heard,” he emphasized.
However, the BE leader warned that it was important that security forces “not lose their minds” over “acts of protest that are not only illegal but also jeopardize the democratic process and could jeopardize elections.”
“The best way to avoid this is to achieve appeasement, and appeasement is achieved when the government responds to legitimate demands,” he added.
Elements of the PSP and GNR staged several protests demanding an allowance identical to that allocated to the judicial police.
The protest began four weeks ago at the initiative of agent Pedro Costa and subsequently spread throughout the country.
Most of the protests have been called through social networks, namely WhatsApp and Telegram, with an inorganic movement called the inop movement emerging in recent days, which is not subject to any interference from trade unions, despite the existence of the platform. which brings together the unions of the PSP and GNR associations, created to demand a review of salary allowances for the security forces.
