In 2023, more than 2,500 people were arrested for crimes related to domestic violence by the Republican National Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police (PSP), those security forces said on Wednesday.
Last year, there were 2,558 arrests between the two security forces.
The GNR says there were 14,824 domestic violence crimes recorded and 1,587 arrests made last year, but the figures are still preliminary.
In 2022, 14,636 crimes of domestic violence were recorded in the PNR area of responsibility and 1,509 people were arrested.
PSP also states in its statement that last year there were 15,499 reports of domestic violence and 971 arrests were made, of which 612 were caught in the act and 359 were caught off-hand.
In the PSP area of responsibility, there were 15,783 domestic violence reports in 2022, with 954 arrests, including 600 at the crime scene and 354 at the off-scene.
According to PSP, there was a decrease in domestic violence crime reports in 2023 (284 fewer reports) compared to 2022, but there were 17 more arrests.
The PSP and GNR data for 2023 are preliminary as the Annual Report on Homeland Security (RASI) has not yet been published.
Representatives of both security forces stressed in their statement that domestic violence is a public crime and must be reported.
