A teacher at Odemira Secondary School is suspected of harassing 15- and 16-year-old students. The complaints arose at the beginning of the school year when several Year 10 students reported alleged incidents occurring in class. “Tell the students that he was going to give a grade of x, but could have given a grade of y or higher if she gave him something in return,” an education department official told NIC.
The students filed a class grievance and then their parents filed a complaint with school management over “alleged abuses of power and acts of sexual harassment by the teacher and class principal.”
The school assigned another teacher to attend classes, which only happened three times. This is not enough for parents. “They are afraid to be in the classroom,” they say. At the end of January, 13 parents filed a complaint against the teacher with the prosecutor’s office.
