In 2023, the emergency number 112 in Portugal received 6.95 million calls, including 1.26 million false calls, PSP reported this Saturday on the occasion of European 112 Day.
PSP, which operates the free European emergency number in Portugal, said in a statement that a total of 6.95 million calls were made to 112 people in 2023, of which 4.93 million were answered.
The rest of the received but not answered calls correspond to calls that were interrupted by a caller on 112 before an operator answered, or random calls to the number.
Of the contacts made, 1.39 million calls were registered as emergency, 1.26 million as false, and 142.4 thousand calls were considered non-occurrence.
The majority (about 86%) of calls recorded as emergencies were to seek help for life-threatening illness or injury or urgent medical needs following warnings about crimes, road traffic accidents and fires.
