The SDP leader’s sharp “no” to an agreement with Chega on forming a government is a message left after the debate between representatives of the moderate and radical right. From a hint of Luis Montenegro’s ‘arrogance’ to Andre Ventura’s ‘irresponsibility’ – debates broadcast RTP, It was marked by confrontation, insults and harsh criticism from leaders of both parties.
PSD President Luis Montenegro expressed confidence in the growth of the Democratic Alliance (SDS Coalition, CDS-PP, PPM), saying that he believes in the possibility of winning the elections. He rules out the possibility of reaching an agreement with Chega, a party with “racist and populist” principles, which uses language that it considers dubious in the political space and which presents “irresponsible” proposals.
“I am not going to consider any further scenario. Voters must consider the political option they want,” Montenegro said, declaring that he will govern the country only if he wins elections scheduled for March 10.
Chegi leader Andre Ventura began by questioning him for calling the PSD a “political prostitute” in statements to journalists on Sunday. Andre Ventura once again confirmed this term, saying that the Social Democrats are “jumping into the lap of the PS” and that they are not looking for ways to achieve power.
“The country has learned that Luis Montenegro is incapable of making a decision. He cannot answer the obvious, he jumps on the PS’s lap,” he said.
According to Andre Ventura, Luis Montenegro should be careful with the “arrogance” he displays in political speeches. “Look, arrogance in politics usually goes wrong,” he noted, recalling Chegi’s rise in the polls.
Regarding the criticism expressed by Montenegro to Chege, Andre Ventura said that he found a certain inconsistency and that the Social Democrat he is the “useful idiot of the left.”
“Luis Montenegro says he is not joining forces with the fundamentalists, but in Madeira he left there saying he was going to make an agreement with the PAN. In Madeira, he joined an extremist party to stay in power,” he explained.
To the statements of the leader of Chegi, Luis Montenegro responded that, contrary to the accusations of his opponent, he has no difficulties in making decisions and that he is simply a thoughtful politician.
“It’s not difficult for me to make decisions. I’m thoughtful, but when I make a decision, I know exactly where I want to go. This is not like Andre Ventura,” he emphasized.
Regarding the proposals from both sides, Luis Montenegro said that he is not concerned because he views AD as synonymous with consistency, reliability and ambition. Montenegro also classified the coalition’s proposals as “realistic” and “feasible”, while Cega’s proposals were classified as the opposite.
Regarding the proposals, Andre Ventura even accused the Democratic Alliance of stealing ideas from Chega, demonstrating his role in this goal. “The SDP says it will now do what it did not do in parliament, Chega presented proposals and the SDP voted against,” he accuses.
The debate between party leaders made room to discuss some of the issues that have recently been covered in the media, such as the incident of protests by security forces. Despite defending the start of negotiations in response to police demands, Montenegro warned Ventura that it was irresponsible to defend party affiliation and strike security forces.
“The first case is to put the parties in police stations; in the event of a strike, this calls into question the authority of the security forces, which further aggravates the situation. This is unacceptable,” Montenegro said.
“PS is the main opponent of Chega, but the opponents of the system are two parties that for 50 years have represented the same system, which has flooded us with corruption, pots and pans, criminals at large, low pensions and salaries. Luis Montenegro and Pedro Nuno Santos are the face of the system that we have to fight,” concluded Ventura.
