At least 53 people were killed this Sunday in fighting between tribes in the Enga region, north of Papua New Guinea, state police said, citing ABC.
Police believe it may have been the region’s worst massacre and that the men were shot dead.
“This is by far the largest massacre I have seen in Enga, and perhaps in the whole of the Highlands of Papua New Guinea,” said George Kakas, acting superintendent of the Royal Papua New Guinea Police. According to the superintendent, one of the tribes was about to attack a neighboring tribe, but it was ambushed.
“From a provincial point of view, we knew this fight was coming, and [alertámos] security forces last week to ensure that they took appropriate measures to prevent this from happening,” explained Enga Regional Governor Peter Ipatas.
The same tribes responsible for the deaths of 60 people in 2023 are believed to have been involved in the attacks.
