A public statement published by the Portuguese office of the European Poverty Action Network, one of the signatory organizations, said that in the next elections it will be necessary to ensure that “commitments previously made regarding the targets to be achieved by 2030 in terms of reduction child poverty are met, regardless of the political and economic situation and its medium-term consequences.”
“Children do not vote, but they play a fundamental role in the present and future of our country and therefore must be adequately taken into account in election programs,” say subscribers, who demand “political commitment from all parties” to ensure that poor children remain on the agenda and exist “a fairer society”.
“This is an issue that affects us all and in which the family must also be central to the action plan,” they defend.
The appeal is also signed by the Institute for Child Support, the National Commission for the Promotion of the Rights and Protection of Children and Youth, the National Confederation of Action against Child Labor, the Portuguese UNICEF Committee, sociologist Fernando Diogo and economist Amelia Bastos. between others.
