The Chairman of the Order of Physicians said this Monday that the idea of government-trained doctors working in the National Health Service (SNS) for a minimum amount of time shows ignorance as “trainee doctors already make that contribution”.
“Internal medicine doctors, that is, doctors in training, are doctors with autonomy and represent a third of the doctors in the SNS. Of the little more than 30 thousand doctors existing in the SNS, 10 thousand are internal medicine doctors and these doctors have an activity of great importance in the SNS,” said Carlos Cortés Luse in Tomar (Santarem).
These specialists, he emphasized, “consult, participate in operations and work in emergency services,” among other things.
While reluctant to comment on the programs of each candidate party for the March 10 elections, Carlos Cortes said there was one aspect that was important to clarify in the Socialist Party’s (PS) election program because, in his opinion, there was “a lot of ignorance.” “on this occasion.
“Internal medicine physicians have been active in SNS for five, six or seven years, depending on their specialty,” Carlos Cortes said.
For the president, the idea of requiring young doctors trained by the state to have a minimum length of service in the SNS “does not make sense,” since trainee doctors “already make this very important contribution to the SNS.”
The person in charge, who this Monday “sponsored” the public presentation of the Clinical Research and Innovation Center (CIIC) at the ULS Médio Tejo, also stated that “people, before making proposals, should be more informed about what the work is.” doctors.”
The PS has already stated that the idea of government-trained doctors working in the National Health Service (NHS) for a minimum amount of time will only be accepted after negotiation and acceptance by the sector’s representative bodies.
This proposal was included in the election program of the PS and was immediately contested, in particular, by the Liberal Initiative (IL) and the Independent Union of Doctors (IM).
An official PS source denied to Lusa that the controversy surrounding the proposal could make sense, and added: “The feasibility assessment means, as already mentioned, that any of these measures will never be adopted without assessment, negotiation and acceptance by a representative of the doctors’ structure.”
The selective program of the PS provides for the possibility of introducing a minimum time devoted to the NHS by medical workers, namely doctors, after a period of specialization.
Regarding doctors who intend to emigrate or work in the private sector, the socialists admit “the possibility of introducing a system of compensation for the country’s public investment in their training.”
