A 67-year-old man who was doused with gasoline and set on fire in a park in the center of Mirandela four months ago has died. “Terrunta,” as he was called, did not survive his serious injuries and died last Tuesday at the São João hospital in Porto, where he had been hospitalized.
The incident occurred on October 22 last year and shocked several people who saw a burning man running through the park on Sunday morning. The victim was treated by Mirandela and INEM firefighters and was transported by helicopter to Gaia Hospital before being transferred to São João. Initially, based on information from witnesses, Vila Real police detained a 48-year-old man and linked the crime to drug trafficking. But less than a month later, the suspect was released after the judiciary again heard from witnesses and collected photographs at a gas station of another man buying gasoline with which he poured the Terruda. This is a man with mental health problems who was hospitalized but is currently at large.
“Terruda” was known for his conflict and life associated with crime. 40 years ago he was convicted of murdering his wife. Upon his release, a wave of robberies and robberies of houses and commercial establishments, as well as drug trafficking, began.
