The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) this Thursday issued a snowfall warning for 10 areas of the continent and left seven under a red warning due to the forecast of rough seas on Friday.
According to the IPMA, the areas of Bragança, Viseu, Porto, Guarda, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Castelo Branco, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga will be under a yellow warning from 21:00 this Thursday until 18:00 Friday on Friday Due to the forecast, snowfall is above 800 meters, with accumulation above 1000 meters.
From 18:00 on Friday until 9:00 on Saturday, the warning level increases to orange in the districts of Viseu, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Braga, Guarda and Castelo Branco (in the last two until 18:00).
Regarding rough seas, the areas of Aveiro, Coimbra, Viana do Castelo and Braga are under an orange warning from 18:00 on Thursday.
The warning will be raised to red (the most severe on a scale of three) from 6pm on Friday to 3pm on Saturday in both these districts and Porto, Leiria and Lisbon, with the latter two lasting until 6pm .
These seven areas will then be under an orange warning from 15:00 Saturday until 00:00 Sunday.
Due to rough seas, the IPMA also placed the areas of Faro, Setúbal and Beja under a yellow warning level (from 00:00 to 09:00 on Friday), and then changed it to orange until 00:00 on Sunday.
The IPMA has also issued a yellow warning for the northern coast of Madeira and Porto Santo due to disturbances at sea from 12:00 Friday until 00:00 Sunday.
An orange warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a moderate or high risk meteorological situation and a yellow warning is issued when there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.
IPMA is forecasting spells of rain until at least the weekend, which could be heavy, with falling temperatures, rough seas and strong winds due to the passage of a cold frontal surface.
The IPMA statement said this weather change “is associated with the weakening of an anticyclone located to the west of the Iberian Peninsula, allowing the influence of a large region of depression centered in the Iceland region, a region with several cores, one of which is associated with a cold frontal surface that will affect the continent in the coming days.”
The institute says one of the cores of this depression region is the Louis Depression, named on Wednesday by Météo France (French Meteorological Service).
This depression mainly affects the northwestern region of France.
