A strong wind warning for the Madeira coast, issued three days ago by the captain of the port of Funchal, has been extended again until 6 a.m. Thursday, the regional maritime authority said on Wednesday.
The successive extension of the warning is based on the forecasts of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) regarding the general weather situation (wind and sea), and there is also a high sea warning for the archipelago.
The captain reports that the wind will be from the northeast, “fresh to very fresh, sometimes strong in the morning and evening.”
On the northern coast the wave will reach four meters and will gradually decrease. In the southern part of the island of Madeira, waves will reach 1.5 meters.
The regional maritime authority is renewing its advice to “the entire maritime community and the general population to exercise caution both when preparing to go to sea and when at sea or in coastal areas.”
Instructions include: strengthen mooring and surveillance of moored and anchored vessels, avoid walking near the sea or in areas exposed to rough seas, and do not engage in recreational fishing, especially near rocks and areas of rocks frequently exposed to breaking waves.
