Pedro Nuno dramatizes and demands the concentration of votes in the PS to stop the “return of the right”

The General Secretary of the PS dramatized this Monday what is at stake in Sunday’s elections, believing that the only way to stop the “return of the right to power” is a concentration of votes for the Socialists.

Pedro Nuno Santos took a politically bipolar stance in statements to journalists during a train ride between Marco de Canaveses and Porto, a line he modernized when he was infrastructure minister.

Sitting next to the head of Porto’s socialist list, Francisco Assis, Pedro Nuno Santos began by saying that his reports were “just PS” regarding Sunday’s legislative elections.

“We can only continue the offensive if the PS defeats the AD (Democratic Alliance). Therefore, we cannot waste votes,” he said, a message he emphasized immediately after.

“The main thing is that we concentrate the votes on the PS and ensure the victory of the PS. Anyone who wants to stop the return of the right to power and a return to the past must concentrate their votes on the PS. I ask all undecided voters to vote for the PS,” he said.

Faced with the scenario of the PS winning the legislative elections and its right-wing parties gaining a majority in parliament, the Socialist leader downplayed the significance of this scenario.

“To be honest, I don’t foresee that there will be a right-wing majority in the next elections, especially since there has been no such unity since the SDP expelled Chega,” he explained.

But then he made a reservation about this understanding of the PSD/Chegi and the possibility of failure to fulfill the promise of Luis Montenegro: “I say, I proceed from this assumption” put forward by the leader of the Social Democrats in relation to Chegi.

As for the final week of the election campaign, the Socialist leader felt it was important for those still undecided to “understand what is at stake after the country has achieved very important budgetary and financial stability.”

“There are problems that remain, but we now have the conditions to move forward and solve many of these problems. And on the 10th we need to make a choice: we have ambitions to invest in public services, in increasing wages and pensions, but our main opponent has a different project,” he said.

According to the PS general secretary, in the legislative elections “there are two different visions of Portuguese society.”

“We are not presenting a tax relief program for just a few, and it will benefit those who do not need it. Our project, which also provides tax incentives, will benefit the vast majority of the population,” he added.
