Regulators from several African countries are meeting Tuesday and Wednesday in the capital of Cape Verde to discuss topics related to regulation and pluralism in the media.
The conference, organized by the Regulatory Authority for Social Communications (ARC) of Cape Verde, will bring together in Praia experts from several member countries of the Network of African Regulatory Authorities for Communications (RIARC), who will “discuss the media as bodies for the realization of fundamental rights and basic support for the existence of free and a democratic society,” says the promotional message for the event.
The conference will be opened by the President of the National Assembly of Cape Verde, Austelino Correia, and the first conference on media regulation, pluralism and press freedom will be chaired by the former President of Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca.
Media pluralism and diversity in the digital age, guaranteeing media pluralism during election periods, and promoting pluralism and diversity in the media are other topics that will be discussed over the two days.
In addition to Cape Verde, speakers are expected from Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Mauritania and Benin.
The Network of African Media Regulators (RIARC) was founded in 1998 in Gabon and currently has 36 members.
