EU slams Hong Kong conviction of two journalists and attack on press freedom

The European Union (EU) on Thursday criticized the sentencing of two independent journalists in Hong Kong, calling it “another sign of the erosion of press freedom” in the Chinese territory.

In a statement, EU External Action Service spokesperson Nabila Massaraly condemned the court’s decision against Cheung Pui-kuen and Lam Shiu-tung, two former editors of the now-closed independent media outlet Stand News, which was owned by Best Pencil (Hong Kong) Limited Group, also closed.

Both journalists were found guilty of conspiracy to produce and publish material inciting sedition.

“This sentence is yet another sign of the erosion of press freedom, a fundamental right enshrined in Hong Kong’s Basic Law,” the spokeswoman said.

The decision “risks hampering the pluralistic exchange of ideas and free flow of information that are the cornerstones of Hong Kong’s economic success.”

Nabila Massarali also criticized the process that led to the conviction, as the trial lasted 57 days instead of the usual 20.

“The EU calls on the Hong Kong authorities to restore press freedom in the territory and stop persecuting journalists. Maintaining a free, independent and pluralistic media is vital for a resilient and healthy society,” he added.
