Chegi’s leader said on Tuesday he had a “99% guarantee and confidence” that the right would form a government if it wins a majority and acknowledged the PSD leader could be removed but maintained a taboo on his sources.
“I will repeat these words that belong to me and for which I alone am responsible. If there is a parliamentary majority on the right, I have a 99% guarantee and confidence that there will be a government on the right,” said Andre Ventura, indicating that he still heard “ that’s what the SDP people say” and “this is nothing new.”
Speaking to reporters at the end of a street rally in Évora, President Chegi said that “if anyone has to go, it will be Luis Montenegro.”
Ventura again declined to say who gave him that guarantee, saying only that he spoke to “several people” on Monday but did not specify with whom.
“I have a 99% guarantee and confidence that there will be a government on the right, and I want to leave, I don’t want to leave this for a second and I accept my words, there will be a government on the right. “You can vote for the right if someone has to leave . It won’t be the right, it will be Luis Montenegro,” he emphasized.
The PSD president refused to enter into any governance agreement with Chega after Sunday’s legislative elections, guaranteeing that “no, it’s a no.” Luis Montenegro also said that he will become prime minister only if he wins the elections.
“We are not going to be hostage to Luis Montenegro in order to have an alternative to socialism,” Andre Ventura said on Tuesday, arguing that there is a “historic chance to have an alternative government” and “only a fool would not do this and leave the PS in charge.”
And he insisted that “if anyone has to go, it will be Montenegro,” and “it’s not Cega or the SDP.”
When asked who would remove the SDP leader from office, he replied that “of course, it will be done by those who believe that there should be a right-wing government,” refusing to do so.
The Chegi leader also justified the inclusion of this issue in the election campaign by the fact that “now the people must decide.”
“Polls show that Chega and the SDP will have a majority, and many voters are wondering: is it worth voting for the right or is it worth ensuring stability by voting for the PS? And the guarantee that I give them, and I will be responsible for this, there will be an alternative on the right. I take this guarantee and will fight for it,” he said.
