“Priscilla”: a fairy tale that became a nightmare

Sofia Coppola’s portrait of Elvis Presley in the film Priscilla, which opens this Thursday, is very different from the portrait shown by Baz Luhrmann in Elvis (2022). While not a villain, the King of Rock, played by Jacob Elordi, is domineering and sexist, the result of an education appropriate to the times, but this does not stop him from being charismatic and seductive.

The film, inspired by the book Elvis and Me, written by Priscilla Presley herself, tells the story of the beginning of the relationship between the 24-year-old singer and Priscilla Beaulieu (the gorgeous Cailee Spaeny), who is only 14 years old. the two eventually marry, and from here one can discover two different sides of Elvis: as an artist and as a husband.

At first, Priscilla lives a fairy tale, the dream of every woman, not realizing the golden cage that has been created around her. At Graceland, she is sculpted to the liking of an artist who teaches her how to dress, apply makeup, and even dye her hair. You can’t work even when he’s gone – you have to be home in case he calls – and you can’t leave the house because of the paparazzi. Little by little, Priscilla becomes a lonely woman and will also reveal a new side.
