Francisco Assis said Pedro Nuno would be a prime minister “capable of resisting illegal interests”

The head of the PS list from Porto, Francisco Assis, said this Thursday that Pedro Nuno Santos will be a Prime Minister “capable of confronting all illegal interests”, highlighting his directness, courage and “tremendous determination”.

These were some of the qualities that Francisco Assis emphasized during a rally in Marco de Canaveses, in the area of Porto, in which he wanted to devote his speech exclusively to the personal characteristics of Pedro Nuno Santos.

At the beginning of his speech, Assis mentioned that this would be his last intervention in this “first campaign” he ran with the current PS leader, of the “many campaigns” he hopes to run with him in the future.

Assis subsequently praised the fact that Pedro Nuno Santos managed to “mobilize the people, the PS and all the people of the democratic left in Portugal” in this campaign, which he considered something that “probably no one else could have done.” what to do in the current historical circumstances.”

The candidate also emphasized his directness, that he “tells the truth, does not resort to any cynicism, refuses calculations, offers solutions and speaks to people face to face, without any evasion.”

On the other hand, he also emphasized the courage that Pedro Nuno Santos “proved throughout his political life,” emphasizing that “he was always loyal, but never subservient, he was always with the PS, but sometimes his voice was uncomfortable ” I have always been a free person and valued autonomy.”

“And we need a prime minister with these characteristics: with his own political and economic thinking, like his. A free, autonomous prime minister, able to resist all the illegal interests that often appear in democratic societies,” he said, provoking prolonged applause from the audience, which, according to the PS, numbered about a thousand people.

Third, Francisco Assis emphasized the “tremendous determination” of Pedro Nuno Santos, saying that “he is not a man who allows himself to be overcome by anything, who understands difficulties, who knows that accidents happen along the way, that things don’t go well.” smooth”. always go the way you want.

“That sometimes we succeed and fail, that there is no smooth path, free from difficulties and accidents, but what makes the one who is determined than the one who gives up is precisely the awareness that there is always a path to follow go that there is a longer path “Bigger ambitions, a more demanding project,” he said.

Finally, the head of the Porto list also called Pedro Nuno Santos “an example of decency”, saying that he has never seen him make “indecent attacks on anyone” or “lose his head” in this campaign, although this contradicts his opponents who believed they had carried out “every imaginable attack” against him.

“He clearly gave a positive speech. We did not give a speech of fear. Those who gave the speech of fear from day one were our opponents. They spend their lives making speeches of fear: fear towards the PS, the democratic system, almost fear towards the Portuguese,” he criticized.

Francisco Assis admitted that he “really missed” politics and said that it was “a reason and an exceptional honor for him to return to the PS to be close to a person like Pedro Nuno Santos.”

“He is neither a moderate nor a radical. He is just like the rest of us: social democratic socialists, democratic socialists, men and women of the democratic left. Sometimes more moderate, sometimes more radical, because this must be a function of the historical circumstances that we face at any given moment,” he said.

As a result, the candidate made a strong call for the mobilization of the PS before the end of the election campaign and added that he does not look at the polls “because they are really useless.”

Earlier, the president of the city council, Marco de Canaveses, Cristina Vieira, criticized the “defeatist, insecure discourse” of the right, which claims that “nothing is working in the country”, and asked the leader of the Social Democrats, Luis Montenegro, to “go away”. your closed world” and “grow and appear.”

“The country does not stand still. Portugal has grown, it is a benchmark at the European level, a country that we should be proud of for the path we have taken and where the socialists bear most of the responsibility,” he said, calling for a vote in the PS so that Pedro Nuno Santos keeps “the country on the right path and on high speed.”
