Another 241 teachers will retire in April, according to data published this week by Caixa Geral de Aposentações. If you count the first four months of the year, 1,290 teachers will retire. There are 256 more than in the same period last year. In just four months, almost the same number of teachers and preschool teachers left the profession as in 2106 and 2017.
Last year, a record for the last decade was reached: 3,521 specialists retired. This year, projections point to 4,705 teacher retirees, the highest number since 2012. However, taking into account data for the first months of 2024 and if the monthly average continues, the number of pensioners could exceed 5,000, estimates Mario Nogueira, secretary general of the National Federation of Teachers (Fenprof).
