Singer Billie Eilish made history this morning by becoming the youngest person ever to win two Oscars, leaving the 96th Academy Awards with a statuette for her original song “What I Was Made For,” the film’s only win. Barbie” at the ceremony.
“You’ll be on time,” Billie Eilish said in the interview room when reporters asked her about the significance of her win and what she would tell anyone looking to pursue a career in the industry.
“I remember being 12 years old and watching a musical and crying because I thought I was a failure and would never have a career,” the actor said. “I saw Matilda on Broadway and it was incredible. I cried because I thought I would never be anything because I wasn’t Matilda.”
Never before has an artist received two Oscars at the age of 22. Billie Eilish achieved first with the song “No Time to Die” from the James Bond film of the same name, and now with one of the most successful themes from the Barbie soundtrack.
His advice to aspiring musicians was not to do it for other people, for numbers or some kind of fame.
“I don’t think that’s what anyone should be doing. I want everyone to do something that they are passionate about and proud of, and that makes them feel like the best version of themselves.”
His brother Finneas O’Connell, with whom he shares an Oscar, also spoke in the interview room about the cultural impact of the film “Barbie,” which he believes is a well-told story.
“People went to the film expecting spectacle and laughter, and I think Greta [Gerwig] and Margot [Robbie] they brought much more than that,” he noted. “When we started thinking about writing a song for the film, we realized it was a lot more than we expected to see,” he continued. “It touched us. I’m honored to be part of the family.”
For Billie Eilish, “Barbie” gave many people a feeling of being noticed, which can be rare, especially for women.
“It was something that resonated and spread around the world, people felt seen, heard and understood,” the singer said.
Before winning the statuette, the duo performed the song on stage at the Dolby Theater, where the ceremony took place this evening in Los Angeles, early this Monday morning in Europe.
