Luanda with water restrictions due to heavy rains

The province of Luanda has been experiencing water supply restrictions for almost a month due to heavy rains, which affect the water collection system and also change the color of this liquid, a source at the distribution company told Lusa this Monday.

According to an official of the State Water Company (Epal), production declines during the main seasons due to rains, which increase turbidity levels.

“When this happens, we must carry out a more thorough treatment process to ensure that the water comes out to quality standards. In such a situation, production decreases and this also affects distribution,” Vladimir Bernardo told Luse.

On the 13th of this month, Epal reported that due to heavy rains in the catchments attached to the company’s water treatment plants located along the Kwanza and Bengo rivers, produced water reached consumers with high levels of turbidity. color change.

Epal’s statement also said that due to the current situation, there was a significant change in the characteristics of raw water, which forced the company to carry out periodic shutdowns of systems.

“It may not rain here in the city, but where we have catchments, especially when it rains in other provinces, we feel the effects where we have catchments, on the Kwanza River and along the Bengo River,” said Vladimir Bernardo. , emphasizing that this situation has been going on for at least three weeks.

An Epal representative was unable to specify the number of victims, emphasizing that the main water supply systems affected were the Kikushi and Kifangondo regions.

“We have 34 distribution points in total, they work every day, basically water is supplied every day, but in reduced quantities,” he added.

Many residents have been forced to use tanker trucks to fill their tanks due to supply constraints.

The person in charge stressed that the company is addressing the issue and expects supplies in some areas of the province to return to normal over the weekend.
