British athletes admit they are unhappy with the participation of transgender women in women’s competitions, but they fear that speaking out could be seen as discrimination. A recent BBC investigation has highlighted some of the concerns women in sport have regarding the integration of transgender athletes into competition.
In recent years, some sports have banned transgender women from participating in women’s sports due to some criticism. A BBC received responses from 143 women from 28 sports on this topic.
A total of 104 athletes said they felt “uncomfortable” or “very uncomfortable” with the inclusion of transgender women in women’s competition. Only 11 said they felt comfortable or very comfortable.
Athletes are concerned that the inclusion of transgender women in women’s competitions could create unfair situations, according to the study. Some believe that a suitable solution would be to create competitions for trans athletes.
“This makes the rules of the game too unfair, no matter what sport you compete in,” said one response to the study.
Despite feeling uncomfortable, most athletes say they will not speak openly about the topic because it is controversial. “Your career will be over if you speak out on this,” said one respondent.
