Tuberculosis cases fell in Mozambique in 2023

Mozambique recorded more than 116,000 cases of tuberculosis in 2023, up from 119,000 in 2022, but the disease remains an “important public health problem,” the Ministry of Health said.

Of the total 116,817 cases reported last year, 11% were diagnosed in children and another 1,685 were resistant to tuberculosis, according to data Lusa reviewed on Tuesday.

“In 2023, up to 95% of patients were successfully treated,” Mozambique’s health ministry said, adding that drugs to treat the disease were available in all hospital departments in the country.

Mozambique recorded 5,300 deaths from tuberculosis and 119,000 cases in 2022, according to a report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) last year.

That same year, WHO ranked Mozambique and Angola among the Portuguese-speaking countries with the highest number of tuberculosis cases.
