Avenida D. Carlos I in Barra do Douro in Porto will be closed until Friday morning due to worsening weather conditions, the city council announced this Wednesday.

In a post on its official page, the municipality said the avenue will remain closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic until Friday morning due to the extension of the orange warning for disturbances at sea.

Avenida D. Carlos I in Barra do Douro is closed from 20:00 Monday “for precautionary reasons and to ensure the safety of people and goods.”

Worsening weather conditions in the coming days with rain and strong winds, rough seas and snowfall have led the National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) to warn the population of the need to take preventive measures.

Based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IMPA), Civil Protection warned on Monday of the possibility of winds, sometimes strong, in the highlands and on the west coast with gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour (kph). HOUR).

For this Wednesday, IPMA forecasts rain, sometimes heavy and persistent, which may be hail and accompanied by thunderstorms and rough seas with waves from the northwest on the west coast reaching six to seven meters north of Cape Carvoeiro (maximum height 12 meters). ).

In the highlands, especially in the north and center, forecasts indicate snowfall gradually decreasing to 600/800 metres.

Due to deteriorating weather conditions, municipal civil protection requires the creation of security perimeters along the coastline and at the approaches to piers and beaches on Avenida D. Carlos I, Avenida Brasil and Avenida de Montevideo or other places that can be respected. be necessary.

The Chamber of Porto assures that it will continue to monitor the situation, “taking all necessary preventive and safety measures and issuing warnings that it deems necessary.”
