Chilling audio from authorities in Baltimore, US, shows what was said moments before the ship collided with a bridge support that eventually collapsed, according to the report. Daily mail.
“There is a ship approaching that has just lost its direction. Therefore, until we can control it, we will have to stop all movement,” the audio recording says.
“The whole bridge collapsed. Get started, get started, whoever you are… everyone. The bridge collapsed,” was still heard.
The crew issued a distress signal minutes before the crash, allowing authorities to restrict traffic, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said.
The ship crashed into one of the bridge’s supports, causing the structure to collapse and fall into the water in a matter of seconds. The ship caught fire.
Because the ship was heading toward the bridge at “very, very high speed,” authorities had plenty of time to prevent cars from crossing the bridge, the governor said.
“These people are heroes. They saved lives last night,” he added.
“We never thought we would physically see the Key Bridge fall like this. It was like something out of an action movie,” said Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, calling it an “unthinkable tragedy.”
