The Pope will attend the Easter Vigil today after canceling his participation in the Way of the Cross.

Pope Francis will attend an Easter vigil in St. Peter’s Basilica this evening after canceling his participation in the Stations of the Cross on Friday to “preserve his health,” the Vatican has confirmed.

The 87-year-old pope is expected to lead an Easter vigil at St. Peter’s Basilica at 7:30 pm (6:30 pm in Lisbon) in front of thousands of pilgrims from around the world.

“To preserve your health, with a view to tomorrow’s vigil [sábado] During Easter Sunday Mass, Pope Francis will follow the Stations of the Cross from Casa Santa Marta, where he resides,” the Holy See said in a statement Friday.

A Vatican source clarified to France-Presse (AFP) that this was a “simple precautionary measure” to ensure that the health of the Catholic Church leader, who had appeared “in good shape” in the last few hours, had not deteriorated “with any particular concerns.” .

Last year, Pope Francis did not preside over the Stations of the Cross because of the bitter cold in Rome while he was recovering from bronchitis for which he was hospitalized.

On Sunday, Francis is expected to attend Easter Mass in St. Peter’s Square at 10:00 (09:00 in Lisbon), followed by the Easter message and blessing “Urbi et Orbi” on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. Pedro, at 12:00 (11:00, in Lisbon).
