Three shellfish harvesters caught by Tagus in just 3 days

Two shellfish gatherers died and one went missing in the waters of the Tagus River in three days. The latest case was reported on Saturday evening when two Nepalese men went missing while collecting shellfish near Cais do Seixalinho, in Montijo.

The alarm was raised at 11:06 pm and led to the deployment of Maritime Authorities, Firefighters and the Air Force to the scene overnight. The search led to the discovery of the body of one of the men early in the morning, not far from the place where they were last seen. At the time of the closure of this publication, the search for the second continued. It is believed that the two men were caught by the tide.

On Thursday, another shellfish harvester, a Nigerian, was found dead in the muddy area of Moita. He went missing on March 26, allegedly under circumstances identical to those of the Nepalese.

Shellfish harvesting at the mouth of the Tagus River is an illegal but very profitable activity: the price per kilogram reaches seven euros.
