Music, debates, lectures and exhibitions mark the program on April 25 in Portalegre.

Exhibitions, lectures, debates and musical shows with the participation of schools and associations are just some of the initiatives that are part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary on April 25 in Portalegre, which continues throughout the year.

The commemorative program, launched earlier this month, involves the municipality’s “communities, groups and schools,” the city council said.

“This participation of schools, the public and associations was important because if we had held the celebrations as usual, there might have been little participation at the time when the 50th anniversary is celebrated on April 25,” he stressed. The president of the municipality of Portalegre, Fermelinda Carvalho, told Lusa on Monday.

Of the extensive program being implemented, the mayor highlighted the creation of the mural, which began this month and includes an exhibition of books and censorship during the Estado Novo, an initiative organized by the Escola Secundária de São Lourenço.

“This exhibition and the execution of the mural is taking place at the school itself, but we also have an exhibition about carnations, which is open to the public from today at the city library,” he said.

The exhibition is organized by the municipality in collaboration with the social network Portalegre and includes two-meter-high carnations made from various waterproof materials.

The carnations are exhibited in the cloisters of the former monastery of Santa Clara, in the room where the Municipal Library of Portalegre is located.

The mayor also celebrated on the night of the 24th exhibition at the Centro de Arte e Arte Portalegre (CAEP), organized by the group O Semeador, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the revolution.

“This is, in my opinion, the highlight of the celebration, as well as the official ceremonies, the raising of the flag, the ceremonial meeting at the Portalegre Congress Center on the 25th, starting at 9:30 am,” he said. added.

From the 25th to the 27th, CAEP will host the show “A Paz é a Paz”, based on the work of Maria João Carvalho, created and produced by the UmColetivo association, the mayor also noted.

“This initiative involves several partners, such as the Euterpe group, the Scharneck Community Centre, the Ligean Orchestra of the municipality of Ponte de Sor, the Teatro Dona Maria, the municipalities of Portalegre and Ponte de Sor. This is an interesting co-production,” said Fermelinda Oak.

Among the various exhibitions, walking tours, lectures and debates announced, the highlight is the debate “José Regio – advanced in politics: democrat, socialist and Christian – is it possible to formulate these three aspects?”, held on the 27th.

The debate will take place at 16:00 at the Casa Museu José Régio with the participation of a group of figures associated with higher education and culture.

Another event will take place on August 31 at 15:00 at a conference entitled “Mural History 1974-2024: 50 Years of Freedom of Expression/Freedom of Expression” at the Portalegre Tapestry Museum with the highest support of the President. Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Souza.

The conference is part of the 3rd cultural biennale Encontros de Cultura do Alto Alentejo, dedicated to the celebration of the 50th anniversary on April 25 and included in the program of European Heritage Days.

José Pacheco Pereira, Jaime Nogueira Pinto and Ruy Tavares are some of the speakers announced by the municipality.
