The emergency obstetrics and gynecology department at Barreiro Hospital in Setubal district is closed until Thursday. This is an emergency closure that has been in place since February, the local health department announced this Monday.
The service, which was due to reopen this Monday, will be closed until 8 a.m. Thursday, local health unit Arco Ribeirinho (ULSAR) announced on its Facebook page, without providing further explanation.
In March, the service was closed twice unexpectedly: in March and once in February.
Lusa asked for clarification on these successive emergency closures but received no response in either situation.
In the notice, ULSAR advises pregnant women to call SNS 24 (808242424) before traveling to the hospital or call 112 in emergency situations.
The local health department of Arco Ribeirinho is part of the Barreiro/Montijo hospital and its area of influence covers the municipalities of Alcochete, Barreiro, Moita and Montijo and a total of 236 thousand users.
On April 3, the Executive Directorate of the National Health Service (DE-SNS) announced the service plan, indicating that of the 43 emergency gynecological and obstetric facilities in the country, 28 will remain open until the end of April. Two will only treat referred patients, while eight will have breaks due to a shortage of doctors, officials said.
The gynecological/obstetric emergency departments at ULS Arrábida (Setúbal) and Arco Ribeirinho (Barreiro) will be open alternately (every two weeks), while ULS Almada (Seixal) will always be closed on weekends.
DE-SNS gives a “positive assessment” of the performance of Operation Safe Birth in the NHS over the past 16 months and says the results of the strategic plan “will be continually assessed”.
In a note accompanying the April Gynecology/Obstetrics Emergency Map, DE-SNS states that the Ministry of Health’s General Services (SPMS) should adapt the SNS 24 response by “temporarily supporting referrals in gynecological situations.” pathology for the gynecological emergency service at ULS Santa Maria” and “update SNS 24 procedures to ensure adequate pre-screening of pregnant women for the presence of the mentioned labor blocks.”
