On the eve of the 50th anniversary of Freedom Day, 112 former colonial war veterans will go on a hunger strike near the Belém Palace. The announcement was made on Saturday in Porto during a protest attended by fifty former militants. .
“We are 112 former combatants who will appear before the President of the Republic to go on hunger strike, just like our comrade who went on hunger strike for seven days,” explained António Silva, spokesman for Pró-Dignidade. movement for the Colonial War Statute (1961–1974).
Saturday’s protest was against non-compliance with the Statute of Ex-Combatants, and in the initiative that begins on the 24th, they have “twelve demands on the government.”
“Amend the combatant statute”, “require that Timorese combatants be included in the new statute”, include “a decent monthly allowance for all combatants and widows”, “require a national pass”, and “that all combatants have access to military hospitals” – these are the first five requirements.
