The United States supports the participation of Russians and Belarusians in the 2024 Olympics

The United States this Thursday took a stand in favor of the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the 2024 Olympics in Paris, but under a neutral flag and without any display of the symbols of these countries, a White House spokeswoman said.

Karine Jean-Pierre clarified that it should be “absolutely clear that they do not represent Russia and Belarus”, and recalled that the US supported the suspension of the federations of these two countries, but the participation of athletes in a neutral capacity, without “flags, emblems or anthems” .

Despite Ukraine’s repeated calls to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from the 2024 Paris Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on January 25 that it would “look into” allowing them to compete under a single flag.

The topic, ruled by the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) in line with the IOC decision, has sparked controversy in the international sports community, with states in favor and others against, with the latest faction being Ukraine invaded by Russia. , but also other Baltic countries and Poland.

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, is in solidarity with the IOC, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky demanded that his French counterpart ban the presence of athletes from countries involved in the military aggression that began on February 24, 2022.

The Paris 2024 Organizing Committee does not have the right to make decisions, and the IOC recalled that the “sole power” in this matter belongs to the international federations.
