The Independent Union of Doctors (SIM) on Tuesday expressed regret over the announcement of the dismissal of National Health Service (SNS) chief executive Fernando Araujo, noting that a “new restructuring” of SNS could be at stake.
“Structural reforms in the SNA must be supported, technical structures and institutions must do their job regardless of the political color of the government,” SNA Secretary General Nuno Rodriguez said in response to Lusa, adding that “there is a joint path that has been followed and that can be interrupted.”
Fernando Araujo announced today that he and his team will submit their resignation to Health Minister Ana Paula Martins, saying that he does not want to be an obstacle to the government’s policies and measures that he deems necessary.
“Respecting the principle of institutional loyalty, I will submit to the Minister of Health, together with the team I lead, my request to resign from my position as chief executive of the National Health Service,” Fernando Araujo said in a statement.
According to Fernando Araujo, this “difficult decision” will allow the new guardianship body to “implement the policies and measures it deems necessary with the necessary speed, without allowing the current executive management of the SNS to be considered an obstacle to its implementation.”
According to SIM Secretary General Nuno Rodriguez, “When people are doing poorly, they should leave.”
SIM hopes that whoever succeeds Fernando Araujo – a “considered, respected and competent person” – will be able to “also address the problems of the SNS and work with the unions to resolve the remaining problems.”
The SNS Executive Office began operations on January 1, 2023, in accordance with the new National Health Service Charter proposed by then Minister Marta Temido, with the aim of coordinating the response to care of all SNS units and modernizing its management.
Last January, a new phase of SNS organizational reform began with the expansion of local health centers throughout the country and the expansion of Model B of family health centers based on a performance incentive regime.
