Greenland storm plunges Serra da Estrela below zero

A mass of cold air coming from Greenland will cause a sudden change in the weather in the next few hours. The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere indicates that “from April 25, there will be a significant change in the weather on the Portuguese mainland, with precipitation in the form of snow at the highest points of the mountains in the north and the Center of the Regions, associated with a decrease in temperature, especially noticeable after a period with values higher than normal for this time of year.”

“This transition to a more unstable pattern is driven by flow from the northern quadrant carrying a cooler air mass on the eastern flank of a North Atlantic anticyclone that will crest from the Azores region to Iceland, thus allowing frontal disturbances to develop and shift into the Iberian peninsula,” the IPMA said in a statement.

From this Thursday, precipitation is expected, initially only in the North and Central, and generally light, spreading to the rest of the territory and intensifying on the 26th due to the passage of a cold frontal surface. Following the passage of this system, unsettled weather will continue until at least the 28th, with showers becoming more frequent and intense in the Northern and Central regions, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms and occasional hail. Snowfall is expected in the northern and central highlands, falling to levels of over 1,200 meters in the afternoon of the 26th.

“Temperatures should begin to decline from the 25th, especially maximum temperatures, with a drop of up to 5°C in the Northern and Central regions. This decline should continue and spread across the entire area gradually until Sunday the 28th. with values slightly below average for this time of year. Minimum temperatures below 10°C are therefore expected across most of the area over the weekend, with the exception of some points along the southern coastal strip of Cabo Carvoeiro. below 5°C in the north and center of the interior. Maximum temperatures should not exceed 20°C, except in some places on the southern coast of the Algarve, and not exceed 15°C in many places in the north and center.” says IPMA. Temperatures in Serra da Estrela are even expected to drop to below zero.

Winds are also expected to increase, especially in the highlands and along the coast, especially on April 25, when it can gust up to 60 km/h, increasing the feeling of cold and the thermal contrast in comparison. to the temperatures observed before this episode.
