CDS-PP proposes to hold a parliamentary session to commemorate November 25, 1975 annually.

This Friday, the CDS-PP presented a draft discussion according to which the Assembly of the Republic will hold an annual solemn session reminiscent of November 25, 1975.

In a discussion draft submitted a day after the ceremonial meeting marking the 50th anniversary of the revolution on April 25, 1974, the CDS-PP argues that this date marked the path “toward an irreversibly liberal democracy of the Western model.”

“The celebration of November 25, a date adhered to by the vast majority of Democrats, should reaffirm the commitment of this House to the universal principles of freedom of expression, party pluralism and free elections,” said two CDS-PP MPs Paulo Nuncio. and João Almeida.

The deputies recall recent statements by the former President of the Republic, General Ramalho Eans, that “November 25 is a continuation of April 25” and that the dates of the revolution of ’74 and November 25 are separate. 75 “is a historical error.”

In addition, the government has decided to create a commission to celebrate the 50th anniversary on November 25 in 2025, emphasizes the CDS-PP, which already in 2019 presented a discussion with the same purpose, rejected by votes against PS, BE, PCP and PEV, while the PSD abstained and PAN. Besides CDS-PP, Chega and IL voted in favor.

In the 10th Legislative Assembly in 2005, the CDS-PP proposed holding a formal session to mark the 30th anniversary of that date, and the initiative lapsed without being voted on.

At Thursday’s ceremonial meeting, the Liberal Initiative announced a resolution that the April 25 commemoration program would include next year’s fiftieth anniversary ceremony on November 25, 1975.

On November 25, 1975, about a thousand paratroopers from the Tancos School Base occupied the Monsanto Air Area Command and six air bases in what the Group of Nine – a group of military personnel from the moderate wing of the Armed Forces Movement – considered this act to be a sign that the so-called leftist military was preparing a coup d’etat.

An attempted uprising by these military units associated with sectors of the extreme left was stopped by the establishment of the Amador Commando Regiment under the leadership of the then Lieutenant Colonel Ramalho Eanes, the future President of the Republic.

At the end of the day, the then President of the Republic, Francisco da Costa Gomes, issued a decree imposing a state of siege in the Lisbon region, and the situation was taken under control by the military assigned to the Group of Nine at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The events of November 25, 1975 have had multiple versions over the decades and have generated controversy over the responsibility of each actor and who took the first step.
